DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING

As a first-time-publishing author, I could not have asked for a better Developmental Editor than SJ. Her feedback was clear and concise, asking questions where she was unclear, giving concrete reasons about what wasn't working for her as a reader, and also sharing the moments that she laughed at and loved. After reading her feedback, I knew she hadn't just read my text, but she had felt it as well. Then she answered all of my questions with detailed answers, even going back and reading items again to make sure she remembered things correctly. She made my project feel personal to her, which made me feel seen as a person with words to share, not words on a page to be corrected.
Kara did a fantastic job on Scorned Obsession. She provides thorough feedback in the developmental edit report on the character/plot arc and story's pacing in terms of ebb and flow. I also loved her comments in the manuscript itself, where she highlights passages where a scene delivered, needs more information, is inconsistent with a previous scene, or is repetitive. It's also important for a developmental editor to be familiar with the genre/sub-genre and the promise of its tropes so an author will deliver the best story possible for the reader. All these are important for me to get right before I polish the manuscript for final edit. I highly recommend Kara and KLS.

One thing about me is that I love run on sentences. I know, I know... How horrible! But there's just something about adding four commas in one sentence that feeds my soul. Thanks to Steph and Louise at Kat's Literary Services, none of you will have to endure the torture of reading that! Not only were their edits everything I needed and more, but Steph provided feedback on areas where certain scenes could be tightened up or changed to improve the overall quality of my book as well.

They were always available to answer questions, and finished both sets of edits EARLY! Steph even provided a separate document providing more in-depth explanations for some suggestions she had made throughout, but also just outlining things she loved while reading. I quite literally couldn't recommend them enough, and I'm eternally grateful for the time and attention they gave my debut novel. Steph, Vanessa, Kat, and the whole team were amazing to work with! As a first-time author, I had no clue what to expect and was feeling overwhelmed by all the things I needed to do, and their prompt responses and clear communication helped calm me so much. One of my pet peeves is finding spelling issues and grammatical errors in books that I’m reading, which is why I knew I had to hire someone to help me, and I’m happy to report that I just uploaded my manuscript to publish and I got a notice from the platform saying “Well done, your manuscript has zero errors!” That is all thanks to my editor and proofreader.
Not only was their timeline followed to a T, which was so helpful to my need for agreements to be honored, but they also left me little notes on the side of the manuscript telling me how much they loved a character or a scene, and they have no idea how happy those comments made me! They are also reasonably priced and super clear in what each package includes. I can’t wait to finish my next book and work with them again.

When she had questions, she asked before assuming she knew what my writing was saying, and her suggestions were consistent in the style of the corrections, as well as conciseness. Her overall comments were encouraging, focusing on her reactions to the writing as well as her areas of expertise, and I found her to be very personable. Vanessa is wonderful to work with. From a proofreading standpoint, her thoroughness proves that multiple eyes on a manuscript are necessary as she still found items that the author with extensive reviews of the text, the developmental editor's two passes, and the copy/line editor didn't see. Additionally, she worked as a sounding board by weighing in on three comments I left in the margin that were items from the copy/line editor, which I responded to with my thinking, and then she gave her viewpoint. Like all my other editors, she is nothing but encouraging. That added support was incredibly freeing as I started to second-, third-, quadruple-guess my own work. Add to that her work as an office administrator, her responses are quick, clear, and it feels like I'm talking to someone in person, rather than over email. She, like everyone else at KLS, has been amazing to work with!

The Release Sheet service is perfect for any author who needs help creating copy to market their book, especially if you're short on time or just have trouble finding the "good stuff" in your own book. Kat put together a thorough document that gave me jumping off points for social media, teasers, and ads. She also pulled a variety of quotes that would grab a potential reader's attention, and has a natural talent for finding the best parts of your book. Having it all organized in one document that I could just jump to whenever I needed to pull something together for promo made my life so much easier! Will definitely be using this service for future books as well.

Kara was incredibly timely with her services and provided comments that were both encouraging and incredibly helpful with respect to how I can improve my story. I was initially feeling a bit insecure about the pacing in my novel, and Kara's comments encouraged me to keep writing while also providing me with a clear direction in where I could improve pacing and character development.
Writing my most recent manuscript was turning out to be a major struggle for me. So I decided to try the alpha reading service to get some additional perspective. The work was done quickly and the comments were thorough. I'd had my suspicions about what was wrong with the story, but hearing someone else point it out for me so clearly and draw my attention to the reasons why it wasn't working made it possible for me to get going on a new version of the story that finally flowed like I hoped it would. I took the coaching service that KLS offers, and Kelly took her time and walked me through all my questions. She had excellent answers and advice, and pointed me to a number of helpful resources that gave me more confidence going forward. It was also just great to talk to someone who had experience but still remembered what it was like to be a new author and could sympathize with the struggles we all go through! Would highly recommend this to anyone who needs some extra help and advice.
INTERNAL FORMATTING

I was SO thankful that Kat's Literary Services offered formatting. It was worth it to have one less item to worry about as release day approaches. I cannot possibly be more insistent when I recommend taking advantage of this service. Kelly was fabulous getting me over the final hurdles to the publishing finish line. Most of the time I didn't even know what questions to ask. Kelly was able to address items I hadn't even thought of, as well as knowing in advance what items I would need help with. When I received my draft of my ebook, she not only made the manuscript look like a book, but she added some fun elements to the first page of every chapter, and also used elements of my book cover for page breaks, making a HUGE difference with just a tiny touch. In addition, she was patient with me when I didn't understand what she was looking for, or what she needed from me, and she never once got frustrated with my elementary level questions. When everything was finalized, she made sure to encourage me and offer support ahead of my release even though her job was technically done.

The eye-grabbing graphics show the title, where to purchase, and has elements of the book in the background. I will definitely go to Kat in the future. Kat's selection of graphics to complement my book cover were spot on! She found the heart of the quotes by pairing them with romantic images, capturing the heat and tenderness of those particular moments, melding black and white with color to create beautiful compositions I'm proud to display on social media. The ones designed for the week before release are SO awesome that I desperately want to share those right now! She gave me lots of options to mix and match, plus the ability to input on further switches and exchanges. Afterwards, she asked for MY feedback on how the information was presented so that she could make sure that it was easy for future clients to understand and use. The marketing piece of the publishing puzzle is by far the most agonizing for me because I have no clue what or how to proceed. Purchasing this piece relieved so much stress on me as a new author and I highly recommend it, even for veteran authors, because it's just one less thing to worry about. Thank you, Kat!
