Various factors influence the number of rounds of editing you need. It can depend on your personal preference, the time you have for editing before release, your self-editing experience, and your budget. It can even vary from project to project. There may be times when you have a manuscript that just won’t cooperate, and that might be when you want to book additional rounds of editing.
🖋️For four rounds of editing, you would start with two passes of Developmental Editing, The Essentials (previously The First Round. A combined Copy and Line edit), and finally, Proofreading. Your manuscript would then be in the best shape possible for your readers.
🖋️If you are struggling with any aspects of your story's “big picture” elements, like plot, character development, theme, pace, structure, tone, etc., then at least one round of Developmental Editing would be recommended. A second pass Developmental Edit is also recommended, if possible, as it allows your Developmental editor to provide feedback on any modifications made after the first pass. After two passes of Developmental Editing, your story would have a solid foundation before moving on to other rounds of technical editing.
🖋️We always recommend that a manuscript go through at least The Essentials (previously The First Round) and a round of Proofreading. In our experience, this is the minimum amount of editing needed. Grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors may seem minor, but they can negatively affect a reader’s enjoyment. The Fundamentals (previously The Total Package) is one of our most popular services because it provides two sets of professional eyes on your manuscript through a combined copy and line edit and a thorough proofread, all at a discounted package rate.
There is no "one size fits all" regarding editing your manuscript. You always have to do what is best for you and your book. We are here to support you along the way and are always happy to answer any questions you may have to help you decide what types of editing you may need.
